Introduction to SEO
SEO (Search engine optimization) is the area of digital marketing that focuses on visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). In search engine results pages there are two ways for growing your online presence:
- Paying to appear in the ads section (paid results)
- Optimizing the website to appear in non-paid listings (organic results)
SEO focus on organic listings while search engine advertising (SEA) focus on paid results. SEO and SEA are both part of the search engine marketing (SEM). Our SEO tutorials are about organic results, not advertising.
Main SEO areas
We split the learning program within three areas. Theses areas correspond to what we believe are the main search engine optimization chapters:
- SEO Strategy
- On-site optimization
- Off-site optimization
SEO Strategy is the first factor of SEO Success. Rankings do not necessarily lead to success. That can be the case when you go with a wrong strategy targeting the wrong keywords. This is a common search engine optimization mistake so it’s important to start your learning with marketing and SEO strategies.
Defining an SEO strategy means deciding where and for what you absolutely need to be visible. In almost of the case you need to grow your visibility on Google traditional search results, but in other cases your favorite place could the video listings, or Google news especially if you’re writing about hot stuff, not evergreen content.
Whatever is the best place for you to be visible, you need to be found with the right keywords and keyword targeting is not an easy task. These are all the areas and concepts that you need to master at the end of your learning program:
- Related topics
- Keyword research
- Competition level
- Query types
- User intent
- Keyword targeting
- Keyword priority
- Keyword/Business Relevance
- Short, mid and long tail keywords
Once you well-chosen your keywords, you need to optimize your web pages for the targetted keywords, but you need to make sure that your code is readable for Search Engines, and you have to work on accessibility. Our on-site optimization tutorials covers the following areas:
- On-page optimization
- Website architecture
- Internal navigation
- Duplicate content policy
- HTTP server response codes
Off-site signals are one of the most important ranking factors. Google ranking algorithm gives a great importance to these signals. Basically, who is linking to you? What is the context of your backlinks? Which of your web pages are linked? How people and where are they talking about you? Trust, authority, relevance are all things Google is trying to figure out before rankings your website.
